Print Information

The medium of choice for more than twenty years, 35mm Kodachrome film, has only recently given way to the digital camera capture, just as the thundering of pistons faded with the approach of the turbojet. The images presented here are being made available through this site in a selection of sizes for purchase, suitable for wall décor in the home or office space. These printed renditions represent the rapidly advancing state of the art in digital photography. Printed using large format Epson archival inks and technology, each print is individually made and signed, after inspection. Under UV glass, the longevity of these prints is expected to be more than 100 years. The result displays all of the impact of the original transparency film, truly rendering the experience of flight.

Print sizes vary, the longest dimension being a minimum size. A 20 X 30 inch image will be on 24 X 36 paper, with an image size at least 30 inches in width. The height will vary by a fraction of an inch plus or minus. The border is intended to provide for this size buffer, and the image name and photographer's signature. The selections also provide for a choice of glossy or luster finish.

Shipping is by U.S. Postal Service Priority Mail in the domestic U.S. International shipping is via U.S. Postal Service Airmail Parcel Post. Shipping, handling and insurance are included in the print price. Packaging is a heavyweight tube for the two larger sizes, and a cardboard flat for the smaller size. Sales tax of 8% will be applied to deliveries in Washington State. Other shipping preferences will be accommodated at actual cost adjustment by pre-arrangement only.

The visualization of flight is a blend of art, engineering, and imagination… bold strokes of color and form against a majestic backdrop of earth and atmosphere. Behind the scenes, a continuous interaction of resource and talent are at work. Two planes join in formation, and search the sky for the scene to play out. Light turbulence in the climb dictates a change in altitude… through a haze layer to clearer air. A layer of broken clouds provides the background of choice. Takeoff time is planned to allow only an hour of remaining light; the earth's own atmosphere will filter the light to the desired effect. As the canopy opens, a splash of near freezing temperature greets the photographer's senses. On the radio frequency, a persistent voice urges a continuous set of commands to the pilots: "Right turn 15 degrees bank... up a bit… you're too close…" the photographer doubles as the director to create the most effective use of lighting, backdrop and composition.

The realization of these efforts is presented in the galleries of Flight of 2 Photography. Photographer Brian M. Silcox has edited twenty years' worth of experiences in the imagery included here. Beginning in the late 1970's, his work was a simple effort to preserve on film what remained flying of a rich history of technology. Concurrently developing a career in commercial aviation, a lifestyle emerged that soon became all encompassing in the pursuit of flight, and photographic light. Building relationships with a variety of organizations and aircraft owners was instrumental in gaining access to the world of restored aviation artifacts. A "trust" between pilot and photographer is integral in achieving the level of quality demanded. Experience gained in thousands of hours of flight has founded a technique and style which are readily witnessed in these galleries.

Immerse yourself in the "Century of Flight" in the galleries of Flight of 2 Photography. Fly with the biplanes of the "Golden Age of Flight" such as the stubby Grumman F3F fighter, and the graceful Beechcraft Staggerwing. Experience the power and beauty in formation with the fabled World War Two classic fighters: Mustang, Thunderbolt, Hellcat, Zero, Warhawk, Lightning, and Spitfire, just to name a few. Also witness the dawn of the jet age, in close formation with the fabulous Messerschmitt 262, the world's first operational jet fighter! These aerial portraits are supplemented with a selection of highly detailed portraits of the cockpits of these famous airplanes that put you in the pilot's perspective. The newest light business jet, Sino Swearingen's SJ-30 brings the collection to the present day in the Civil Classics Gallery, pointing the way forward for Flight of 2 Photography.
